cats, mice & death

Game inspired by episodes of Mason's Rats

I like the mix between technology and fieldwork, so when I found out about the GoedWare Jam, it was the opportunity. I decided to make a game inspired by Mason's Rats chapter of Love, Death & Robots. My proposal is inspired by the cat Susan, the TT-15 machine and the rats. I fused a cat with TT-15's laser gun to create the main character of the game. I was also inspired by the Beyond the Aquila Rift chapter of Love, Death & Robots and Stranger Things. The character would have to move in two dimensions to get items. I added some kittens and fish to further understand the purpose of the character who had to feed his kittens and go in search of these fish (food).

Day 1

I first designed the character in MagicaVoxel, animated it in Blender, and then added it in Unity. It was the first time that I animated a character in Blender and I had some problems with the textures, so I decided to do only 3 animations: idle, walk and jump.

Day 2

I then designed the walls and programmed the colliders so the player doesn't fall off and knows the way. Also, I added a surface in the form of cubes for easy assembly.

Day 3

We designed mice to attack the character, and also added a laser cannon on top of the character.  The laser only fired in front of the character, I thought this would be difficult for the player to manipulate.

Day 4

I added the mouse function to aim at a point on the floor for the laser. That was easier for the player to manipulate. Also, add the objects that the character must pick up (fish). And a plate that is the starting and ending point, which the character must return to once he has all the fish.

Day 5

I added a UI with a character life bar, as well as indicators of the number of fish collected. Also, I added music and song from freesound.org.

Day 6

I added in the UI the name of the level. Also, I added a simple DB (Rest API - Firebase) where players can record their high score (highest level reached).

Day 7

Here I already had an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). To improve the current version, the designs were redesigned and the levels were also developed in order of difficulty, which had to be analyzed and also developed into an easy-to-understand tutorial. Finally, I added The Easter Egg. The uploaded version has only 3 levels. We were unable to upload the version with all 10 levels to the Jam in time. I hope you still want to play the other levels after the Jam is over.
